This is a special Hawker Hunter - after the first production F.Mk1s had flown in 1953; it was decided to investigate the use of an afterburning Avon engine, to be fitted in WB188. The new engine, the Rolls-Royce Avon RA.7R, was capable of producing 6750 lb 'dry' and 9500 lb with afterburning, and presented HAL with the opportunity to break the world speed record, set by a USAF F-86D in July 1953. Designated the F.Mk.3 and painted scarlet, WB188 was flown by Neville Duke to a speed of 727.6 mph. on September 7, 1953, and 12 days later broke the 100 km closed circuit record at a speed of 709.2 mph. WB188 was based at Tangmere for the attempt on the world speed record, which was captured over a 3km course at Rustington on the Sussex coast. All excrescencies were removed and a new streamline nose and canopy were fitted.
