F-105D-31-RE
Unit: 563rd TFS, 23rd TFW, USAF
Serial: FH-398 (62-4398)

F-105Ds of the 563rd TFS, 23rd TFW, such as 62-4398 depicted here, were the first Thunderchiefs to operate over Vietnam. With aircraft yet to be camouflaged, they carried 16 750-lb (340-kg) bombs each to attack Viet Cong targets in June 1965.

F-105D-31-RE
Unit: 561st TFS, 23rd TFW (6235th TFW), USAF
Serial: FH-408 (62-4408)

Takhli RTAFB, Thailand, May 1965.

This aircraft has Project Look Alike aluminized lacquer paint with buzz numbers and 30-inch fuselage insignia, but it lacks a strike camera, ECM or the cooling air-scoops on the rear fuselage. Pods for 2.75-inch rockets are carried, however. The 561st TFS received F-105Ds in late 1963, and it subsequently became the first 23rd TFW unit to deploy under Operation One Buck Nine from McConnell AFB to Yokota AB for SIOP (nuclear alert) duties between 27 February and 10 July 1965. From 6 April a third of the squadron rotated to Takhli RTAFB, giving most of its pilots combat experience in the 70 missions flown before returning to McConnell AFB. This F-105D was lost with its pilot, Capt Robert Wistrand, on 9 May 1965 while strafing during a Steel Tiger armed reconnaissance sortie over the Mu Gia Pass. Wistrand was hit while strafing a AAA site and did not eject from the diving aircraft.

F-105G-1-RE "Fat Fanny"
Unit: 333rd TFS, 388th TFW, USAF
Serial: 436/RK (62-4436)

Takhli RTAFB, Thailand, December 1968.

Upgraded from an F-105F to G-1 configuration, this aircraft was flown by Maj Don Kilgus and Capt Ted Lowry as part of the 'Firebird' Iron Hand force supporting the Son Tay prison rescue attempt on 20/21 November 1970. SAM site suppression was effective in protecting the strike force, but two of the 18 SAMs fired from eight sites hit F-105Gs. Kilgus' jet was holed in the fuel tank, forcing the crew to eject near the Plain of Jars, from where they were rescued by HH-53 helicopters. Another F-105G, 'Firebird 3', flown by Majs Everett Fansler and Bill Starkey, was damaged but recovered.

F-105F-1-RE "Half Fast"
Unit: 357th TFS, 388th TFW, USAF
Serial: 38317 (63-8317)

Takhli RTAFB, Thailand, December 1967.

The aircraft received the TCTO IF-105-1133 avionics refit that upgraded it to early F-105G-1 standard. On 19 December 1967, Capt Philip Drew and Maj William Wheeler (as 'Otter 03') scored the final F-105 MiG kill of the war during an Iron Hand mission. Getting in behind two pursuing MiG-17s, they approached one of the VPAF jets in its blind spot and destroyed it with 20 mm cannon fire. Subsequently nicknamed Root Pack Rat, the aircraft fell to 37 mm fire while attacking a Phu Qui SAM site on 30 September 1968. Pilot Capt Clifford Wayne Fieszel and EWO Maj Howard Horton Smith remain missing in action.

F-105G (F-105F-1-RE)
Unit: 561st TFS, 388th TFW, USAF
Serial: MD (63-8265)

After F-105F's had been specially equipped for 'Combat Martin' jamming, 'Commando Nail' precision night bombing and 'Wild Weasel' SAM suppression roles in Vietnam, 60 were further modified to F-105Gs with 'Wild Weasel III' equipment in fuselage-side fairings. With AGM-45A Shrike anti-radar missile visible on the wing pylon, this F-105G carries the markings of the 561st TFS, 23rd TFW (?), at McConnell AFB before deployment to Vietnam.

Later it have the same appearance at Korat, Thailand, before the unit received its special 'WW' code. The 'G' featured ECM fairings scabbed on the fuselage sides, thus freeing wing pylons for extra missiles of fuel.
