F-105D-30-RE "Thor's Hammer"
Unit: 357th TFS, 355th TFW, USAF
Serial: 246/RU (62-4246, 59-9246 ?)

Most probably AF59246 code is wrong because Thud named 'Thor's Hammer' was 62-4246.

Unit: 34th TFS, 388th TFW, USAF
Serial: 270/JJ (62-4270)

Korat RTAFB, Thailand, early 1969.

Assigned to Col Garrett, this aircraft bore the Latin motto 'Noli Non Legitime Carbor Undum Est' ('Don't let the bastards grind you down') around its 'zonked tiger' nose-art. 62-4270 was hit by AAA when 1Lt R.A.Stafford made his fourth pass at a road target during a Steel Tiger mission on 29 March 1969. The pilot ejected from the burning aircraft and was rescued by a USAF helicopter.

F-105D-31-RE "Little Lois Ann/Calamity Jane/Wendy June"
Unit: 334th TFS, 355th TFW, USAF
Serial: 62-4347

Takhli RTAFB, Thailand, November 1965.

This aircraft was nicknamed Little Lois Ann, Calamity Jane and Wendy June in 355th TFW service from 29 July 1963 through to 24 October 1970. On 6 August 1964 it was among the 18 F-105Ds of the 357th TFS deployed to Yokota AB in response to the Gulf of Tonkin incident under Operation One Buck Two. 62-4347 then served at Kadena AB with the 469th TFS/355th TFW and the 421st TFS, prior to joining the 355th TFW at Takhli RTAFB on 12 March 1966. From there the jet flew combat missions for four years, regularly setting monthly sortie and flight-hours records without serious combat damage. Post-war, it served with the Kansas ANG's 184th TFTG until 28 March 1980, and then the 466th TFS, AFRES (including a Coronet Rudder deployment to Skrydstrup, Denmark). until retirement on 3 October 1983. The veteran jet took part in the final F-105 flypast at Hill AFB, decorated as the 'High Time Thud' in recognition of its 6730.5 flying hours - a record for the F-105. It was then put on permanent display at Hill AFB.

F-105D-31-RE "12 O'Clock High"
Unit: 421st TFS, 388th TFW, USAF
Serial: 24359 (62-4359)

Korat RTAFB, Thailand, April 1967.

This aircraft has an early post-camouflage serial presentation, and is armed with six M117 bombs. It also has an AN/ALQ-71 pod on its outer starboard wing pylon. Later transferred to the 469th TFS, the jet was written off with the unit on 12 September 1968. Diverted to Takhli upon its return from a mission due to Korat being 'weathered out' and inaccessible, the F-105 ran out of fuel and crashed as no tanker was available. The pilot ejected safely.

F-105D-31-RE "Iron Duke"
Unit: 354th TFS, 388th TFW, USAF
Serial: 360/RM (62-4360)

Takhli RTAFB, Thailand, May 1970.

Delivered to the 8th TFW at Itazuke AB in August 1963, 62-4360 transferred to the 41st AD at Yokota AB in May 1964. It was then passed on to the 6441st TFW and thence to the 23rd TFW and TDY deployments with the 355th TFW. For most of 1966-67 62-4360 stood nuclear alert at Yokota AB, with a transfer to the 18th TFW at Kadena AB following in January 1968. From September of that year the jet was at Korat with the 388th TFW, where it gained the nicknames '12 O'Clock High' (469th TFS) and Screaming Eagle (44th TFS). Returning briefly to the 355th TFW in April 1970 (when it was assigned to 1Lt Allan V Shulke, who named it 'IRON DUKE'). the F-105 had been transferred back to the 18th TFW by 10 October 1970. Here it remained until further reassignment to the AFRES's 507th TFG in May 1972. Following two years as an Aircraft Battle Damage Repair (ABDR) airframe at McClellan AFB in 1983-85, the jet was passed on to the USAF Museum for display at Tinker AFB.

F-105D-31-RE
Unit: 335th TFS, 4th TFW (attached to the 355th TFW), USAF
Serial: 62-4379

Takhli RTAFB, Thailand, December 1965.

This aircraft is depicted here as it appeared in the last week of the unit's TDY to Takhli from Yokota, which had begun on 3 November 1965. The 335th's aircraft were reassigned to the 333rd TFS from 5 December 1965 for Barrel Roll and Steel Tiger operations. 62-4379 was later passed on to the 421st TFS/388th TFW at Korat RTAFB. It was one of two F-105Ds from the squadron that were shot down within minutes of each other on 2 November 1966 over the North. Capt R.F.Loken was strafing a railway bridge when 62-4379 was hit by ground-fire. It flew him to a comparatively safe area of Laos before he had to bailout and return home by rescue helicopter. The jet is seen here carrying Mk.84 bombs.
