F-105D-5-RE "Betty's Boy"
Unit: 354th TFS, 355th TFW, USAF
Serial: 81188 (58-1168)

Takhli RTAFB, Thailand, early 1967.

This aircraft also has 'reverse camouflage', as well as an incorrectly marked serial, '81188'. Betty's Boy was being flown by Maj Jack Hunt as 'Nitro 01' when he shot down a MiG-17 during an attack on the Xuan Mai barracks on 19 April 1967. Hunt ordered the flight to jettison ordnance, after which both he and Maj Fred Tolman destroyed MiG-17s with 20 mm cannon fire. 58-1168 was subsequently lost during the successful 25 October 1967 attack on the Paul Doumer Bridge, Maj Gene 'Smitty' Smith, leading 'Wildcat' flight, being hit by 57 mm AAA. MiG-killer Capt G I Basel reported seeing the aircraft turn into 'a tumbling torch in the sky'. Injured during ejection and twice shot in the leg during capture, Maj Smith endured captivity until 14 March 1973.

F-105D-25-RE "Mickey Titty Chi"
Unit: 34th TFS, 388th TFW, USAF
Serial: 00424 (60-0424)

Korat RTAB, Thailand, early 1967.

This jet was flown by Maj Ralph L. Kuster as 'Hambone 02' on 3 June 1967 when the 388th TFS attacked the Bac Giang railway bridge. As the lead flight, Kuster's F-105s were first to run through the SAMs using the tight 'pod' formation required for effective deployment of ECM. They drew heavy AAA on approach to the target, and Kuster used his gun-camera to record the weapons' positions. Departing the target, the F-105s encountered MiG-17s, and Kuster (later noted for his extravagant moustache) and Capt Larry Wiggins ('Hambone 03') both shot a fighter down. The aircraft was hit by AAA on 10 July 1967 and MiG killer Maj Maurice Seaver ejected safely.
