MiG-21MF
Unit: unknown
Serial: 1054

Debre Zelt, later 1980s. Starting in September 1978 Ethiopians received some 40 MiG-21MFs and MiG-21Us from Cuba and the USSR. These aircraft entered service with the 1st and 2nd FIS, one of which was equipped with ex-Cuban, and the other with ex-USSR aircraft. Both units were initially manned by Cuban personnel, although a number of EtAF pilots was soon qualified to fly the type.

According this - Debre Zelt, Autumn, 1998 г. This MiG-21bis '1087' is one of the examples sent to Israel for general overhaul and an upgrade to MiG-21-2000 standard. Due to the lack of funds, the aircraft was 'only' completely overhauled before being returned to Ethiopia and then used during the war with Eritrea. Another MiG-21 from the same batch overhauled in Israel was '1083', flown by Col. Petros, when this was shot down and captured during an attack against Asmara AB, on 6 June 1998.

MiG-21MF
Unit: unknown
Serial: 1127

MiG-21 was the main fighter-bomber of the Ethiopian Air Force between late 1977 and early 1999. The example shown here, '1127', survived the first war against Eritrea and the capture by the Eritrean forces while at Asmara, in May 1991, was returned to Ethiopia and probably refurbished in order to fight another war against the Eritreans, 1998-2000.

MiG-21R
Unit: unknown
Serial: 1464

Ethiopia has received also a small batch of MiG-21Rs. The date of their arrival is unknown, but it is possible that some of the MiG-21s that operated over Somalia time and again in the 1980s were not there on strike-sorties but flying reconnaissance. This example survived the ordeal of the Ogaden and the long war with Eritrea, and was captured at Asmara, in 1991. Its eventual fate is unknown; it is not very likely, however, that it was returned to Ethiopia and made flyable again.

MiG-21bis
Unit: unknown
Serial: 1106

Starting in September 1978, Ethiopians received some 40 MiG-21bis' and MiG-21UMs from the USSR. These aircraft entered service with the 1st and 2nd FIS, one of which was equipped with ex-Cuban, and the other with ex-USSR aircraft. Both units were initially manned by Cuban personnel, although a number of EtAF pilots was soon qualified to fly the type as well. To disappointment of their Soviet advisors, Ethiopian pilots preferred the F-5E to MiG-21 for air combat, and also proved wastly superior to their Somali MiG-21-counterparts.
