XP-80A "Grey Ghost"

Serial: 01 (44-83021, c/n 141-1001)

The first prototype. It flew for the first time on June 10th, 1944. Later it crashed after an engine failure on March 20th, 1945, but test pilot Tony LeVier managed to parachute to safety and escaped with only back injuries.

P-80A-1-LO "Baby Jean"

Serial: PN-226 (44-85226)

Circa 1946 the 412th Fighter Group, was the first to equip with the P-80A, which was the first successful jet-propulsion fighter of the USA. In 1948 the P-prefix (pursuit) was dropped in favour of F (fighter). This aircraft was modernized to F-80C-11-LO.
