Su-7BMK
Unit: 32 Sqn "The Thunderbirds", IAF
Serial: B-871

There are very few colour photographs of IAF Su-7's from the time of the 1971 War, and most of these are of poor quality, which makes the identification of colours used to camouflage them extremely problematic. From available black/white photographs, it is obvious that most Sukhois were hastily and heavily camouflaged, usually with paints of poor quality, which - together with heavy use as well as hot and humid weather - swiftly made the aircraft appear badly worn out and dirty. Most of the IAF Su-7BMK's appeared either in 'bare metall' overall, or a three-colour camouflage as seen on the example from the No.32 Squadron bellow. Some, however, should have got a camouflage like this, in sand and dark earth (although, it is very likely that fields in dark earth were actually either dark green or even black).

Eight Su-7BMK's from No.32 Squadron IAF, led by Sqn.Ldr. Bhatia, attacked Shorkot/Rafiqui AB, at 10:45 hrs on 4 December 1971. Bhatia and other members of his formation claimed destruction of between one and two B-57s and up to three Sabres on the ground. All Indian fighters returned safely to Amritsar. For a mission against such a distant target, the No.32 Squadron's Su-7s were equipped with two 600-litre drop tanks under the fuselage, and armed with two UV-57-16 rocket pods under each wing.

Later during the war, the Su-7BMK flown by Sqn.Ldr. Bhatia during two strikes against Shorkot AB, on 4 December 1971, was seen wearing this hastily applied camouflage - exact colours of which remain unknown, and are rather a guess based on the colours used on most of the other IAF Su-7's and MiG-21's during that war. Note the traces of heavy use around the cannons, and two FAB-250 M-62 bombs under the centreline.

Serial: B-911

The Soviets were swift to deliver the first 90 Su-7s to India, in 1968 and 1969, and six IAF units re-qualified on the type by September of the later year. Therefore, the IAF obtained a fleet of almost 100 fighters within barely a year. Additional examples delivered by 1971 brought the fleet to between 100 and 116 Su-7BMK operational airframes by the time of the war with Pakistan, in 1971. This example should have served with the No.32 Squadron.
