'Que Sera Sera' ('What will be, will be'), made history by becoming the first aircraft to land at the South Pole on October 31st, 1956. The pilots were Lieutenant Commander 'Gus' Shinn, US Navy, and Captain 'Trigger' Hawkes, US Navy.

One of the six Douglas transports which flew to Little America in Antarctica from the CVA-47 USS Philippine Sea. The main wheels were later removed while the aircraft were in Antarctica with Operation High Jump.

One of the 30 С-47s currently (end of 1960s) on the US Army inventory is 43-9095, ex-R4D-5, BuNo.39095, of the US Army Missile Command and based at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. It was delivered to the Army from the Naval Air Facility Litchfield Park in November 1965.
