Ju.52/3mg4e
Unit: 11.IV./KGzbV 1
Serial: 1Z+BF

Ju.52/3mg4e in Spanish Civil War camouflage: Light Grey, Dark Green and Light Olive on the upper surfaces and sides; and Light Bleu for the underside. The distinctive Yellow markings characterized German aircraft and their allies operating on the Russian front. The depicted aircraft belonged to IV./KGzbV 1 (Kampfgeschwader zur besonderen Verwendung, or Bombardment Wing for special duties). The red outline of the aircraft letter B indicated 11. Staffel, operating in the Balkans in 1941-1942.

Some confusion surrounds this aircraft's code. The last letter 'F' normally indicated V.Gruppe staff flight, and as such, the letter 'B' should be bright green, or at least outlined in bright green. If, as the caption states, the machine did actually belong to 11.Staffel, the last letter would have been 'V' and the letter 'B' would have been yellow. The standard colour coding system applied to Luftwaffe aircraft was slightly different in transport units, as they usually had four Staffeln per Gruppe rather than the standard three, medium blue being used as the identification colour for the fourth Staffel within each Gruppe. As a result, H, K and L remained as the 1, 2 and 3. Staffel identification letters within first Gruppe, but in transport units, these were joined by the letter M, (normally indicating 4.Staffel within II.Gruppe) and therefore increasing I.Gruppe to four Staffeln, M being preceded by a medium blue coloured aircraft identification letter. The remaining Staffeln within the squadron would move up one place on the grid, and the identification colours would adjust accordingly.
