Anson Mk.? | Unit: 500 Sqn, RAF Serial: MK-V (N9732) On 1st June 1940 N9732. flown by P/O P.Peters, was attacked by Messerschmitt Bf.109E's off the French coast. In the ensuing combat. P/O Peters claimed one Bf.109 with his forward-firing 0.303 inch machine gun, whilst LAC Popper, in the mid-upper turret, claimed another Bf.109!

The Dutch personnel showed their nationality by painting small Dutch insignias on the fin. The references do not agree on the lower surfaces color. Either Silver Dope (aluminium) or Sky Grey colours were applied.

RAF Thornaby was the home of 233 Squadron amongst others before the outbreak WW2 and would go on to play an important part in Coastal Command, and postwar as a base for air sea rescue units and 608 Squadron.
