BV.222V-2 | Unit: unknown Serial: X4+BH (W.Nr.222336) The operation 'Treasury Prospectors' (Schatzgraeber), 1944.
It is not known very much that during the WWII Luftwaffe managed manned weather-stations on Alexandra-land (this is an island within Franz Josef Land archipelago, that means in those time Soviet territory). In July 1944 one Fw 200C-3 of KG40 should evacuate the personnel which was taken ill from the Alexandra-land station. During the landing the machine landing-gear became broken. To rescue 'shipwrecked', BV.222V-2 was engaged and replaced from Biscarrose in France to one sea airplanes supply base in Norway. The BV.222 had to throw the necessary supply material including the spare parts for reparation down flying over the weather-station because landing on water surface was impossible. Generally, as the date of this action the 8th July 1944 is set up.
