The first prototype Boulton Paul P.82 in its first configuration in 1937, before receiving the name 'Defiant'. As the turret was not ready, the rear fuselage was faired over so that the first flight trials could commence.

By 1938 the turret had been to the prototype, along with the retractable fairings. Note also the addition of exhaust stubs, anti-glare panel, change in position of markings and replacement of tailskid with tailwheel.
