Spitfire Mk.Vc/Trop
Unit: 249 Sqn, RAF
Serial: S (BR323)

Pilot - Sergeant George Beurling. Malta, July 1942. The Canadian ace achieved his very first victories flying this aircraft in two cases: on 6th July, shooting down two MC.202, one Bf.109 and damaging a Cant Z.1007 bomber, and on July 10th, shooting down one MC.202 and one Bf.109. The aircraft would be destroyed two days later, while being flown by another pilot. The camouflage scheme consists of Dark Earth and Dark Mediterranean Blue which has covered all the areas originally painted in Mid Stone. Azure Blue for the lower surfaces. Many a pilot in Malta found the colour of Mid Stone too bright for operations over the sea and decided to hastily repaint their aircraft in this scheme, using field stock colours. The pace of operations over the besieged island did not allow time for the ground crews to paint the squadron's recognition letters on the fuselage sides (in 249's case 'GN'), so the majority of them had only their individual letter painted.

Spitfire Mk.Vb/Trop
Unit: 249 Sqn, RAF
Serial: T-L (EP706)

Malta, 1942. Pilot Officer G.Beurling flew this aircraft scoring four victories (19th-22nd) - two Bf.109s destroyed on 25th September 1942 plus one damaged, and two again destroyed on 10th October 1942. Typical Mediterranean camouflage scheme of Dark Earth-Mid Stone-Azure Blue. Ahead of the cockpit bears the marks of 20 black crosses representing his number of kills until then -kind of misleading since at least half of them were scored against Italian aircraft. The single letter 'T' stands for 'Tiger', the radio call sign for 249 Squadron.
