This was a sea rescue unit which used Spitfires for patrol flights locating crashes. Spitfires were used by these for spotting downed pilots in the Channel and North Sea, then radioing their position for ASR launches or Walruses to pick them up.

This a/c represents non-2nd TAF support on D-Day, 6th June 1944. Flown by Flight Lieutenant W.'Johnny' Johnston from Deanland ALG, Kent, UK, on low cover over Sword Beech and later escort to No.38 Group transport and glider tugs. Shot down by falk and crash landed on Coulombs, B6 airfield on 15 June 1944.
