Fiat G.55 Serie I
Unit: Squadriglia Autonoma "Montefusco-Bonet", Gruppo Complementare Caccia
Serial: 5 (MM91067)

Venaria Reale (Turin), April 1944. Squadriglia Autonoma 'Montefusco' (later 'Montefusco-Bonet') was spontaneously formed in late 1943 at Turin's Venaria Reale airfield to protect the city from Allied bombardment. Some of its mixed array of fighters (Macchi MC.205Vs and Fiat G.55s) were acquired through popular subscription by Turin citizens. The unit was later absorbed by I? Gruppo Caccia in June of 1944 to strengthen its depleted 3 Squadriglia. This Centauro carries its namesake's signature just aft of the propeller, Capitano Bonet having been killed in action on 29 March 1944. (Camouflage: Verde Oliva Scuro 2 upper surfaces with Grigio Azzurro Chiaro 1 undersurfaces).

Fiat G.55 Serie I
Unit: 1 Squadriglia, II Gruppo Caccia
Serial: 7 (MM91077)

Cascina Vaga (Pavia), April-May 1944. During the first months of 1944, a number of II? Grupo Caccia aircraft tested some experimental camouflage schemes. This Centauro of 1? Squadriglia wears a Giallo Mimetico 3/ Verde Mimetico 3/ Marrone Mimetico 53193? splinter pattern reminiscent of that of earlier Fiat CR.32s and Breda Ba.65s. It was applied over the original factory Verde Oliva Scuro 2 finish, still visible on the background of the fuselage stencillings and the 'Gigi Tre Osei' emblem on the nose. This was the personal mount of Ten. Ugo Drago, the squadron's CO. (Camouflage: Giallo Mimetico 3/ Verde Mimetico 3/ Marrone Mimetico 53193 upper surfaces with Grigio Azzurro Chiaro 1 undersurfaces).

Fiat G.55 Serie I
Unit: 1 Squadriglia, II Gruppo Caccia
Serial: 8 (MM91081)

Cascina Vaga (Pavia), May 1944. The reasons for this aircraft's yellow tactical number -it should be black- remain a mystery. Period black and white photographs clearly show this detail as well as the half finished port fuselage flag. Curiously enough, the Italian national colours have been applied in reverse (the green should be to the left hand side). Note the replacement rudder and aft cockpit fuselage 'hump' section -probably cannibalised from another aircraft- finished in Verde Oliva Scuro 2. (Camouflage: Giallo Mimetico 3/ Verde Mimetico 3/ Marrone Mimetico 53193? upper surfaces with Grigio Azzurro Chiaro 1 undersurfaces).

Fiat G.55 Serie I
Unit: Nucleo Comando II Gruppo Caccia
Serial: 2 (MM91094)

Pilot - commander of II Gruppo. Cascina Vaga (Pavia), May 1944. This aircraft's tactical number in blue with a white outline was typical of II Gruppo's Nucleo Comando [staff flight], while its 1, 2, and 3 Squadriglie carried black with white outline, yellow, and white numbers respectively. The replacement upper engine access panel of this G.55 is still painted in its factory Verde Anticorrozione primer. (Camouflage: Verde Oliva Scuro 2 upper surfaces with Grigio Azzurro Chiaro 1 undersurfaces). Note: for the Fiats G.55 seems that the traces of exhaust products are more significant at the right side than at the left one. The bottom national marking is quadratic with white base.

Fiat G.55 Serie I
Unit: unknown
Serial: MM91150

Piombino (Liorna), August 1944. This attractively camouflaged Centauro was flown to British-controlled Piombino airfield by defecting Fiat test pilot M.llo. Serafino Agostini, accompanied by an Italian intelligence officer, on 4 August 1944. The exact colours used in this camouflage scheme remain controversial; the green shade could be either Verde Oliva Scuro 2 or Verde Mimetico 3, while the sand colour has been described as either Giallo Mimetico 3 or Nocciola Chiaro 4 - make your own decision! Fortunately, all the sources consulted coincide in reporting Grigio Azzurro Chiaro 1 painted undersurfaces.
