MiG-3 (early series)
Unit: OIAE, Baltic fleet
Serial: 1 (s/n.2171)

This example piloted by lt. N.M. Estin made a forced landing after being hit by AA fire near Utti air base in southern Finland on July 12, 1941. The unit was a detached fighter squadron (OIAE) of the Baltic fleet. The interpretation of this photo has given many doubts, because the radiator cowling looks not visible, encouraging to identify it as a MiG-1; on a further exam, it was seen that what is visible under the fuselage is compatible with a MiG-3, as the tail wheel doors too. The dark shades on the damaged wing are probably light reflections over the gloss distorted surface of the wing, except the one near the wing root, that is a paint retouch. Remains of this example still exist in the Vesivehmaa museum; they show a FS-35352 light blue on the undersurfaces (both metallic and wooden) and cockpit interior panels, and on a retouch visible on the green stabilizer.

This example captured by the Germans at Kaunas air base at the beginning of the war in June 1941. It looks to be painted Factory Green, with a yellow fin and number 3; there is a thin white stripe under the yellow stabilizer tip.

Most probably tail-fin is RED. Also, painting must be lighter.

MiG-3 (early series)
Unit: unknown
Serial: 5

This photo shows an example captured by Germans at the beginning of the war. The most interesting, but uncertain, characteristic is a large 5 that looks visible on the tail. The characteristic that make me think it is repainted with green is not its low contrast (compatible with red painting) but its bad sharpness, and the presence of non-standard bands on the wings instead of the red stars. Second picture - is the look of the aircraft before repainting with green could be hypothesized as.
