Bf.109E-4
Unit: 9./JG 52
Serial: 1+~

France, June 1940. Although German fighters had switched to a camouflage pattern with light blue fuselage sides during the Winter of 1939-1940, operations during the 'Sitzkrieg' were to show that this was too conspicuous on the ground in the spring of 1940. Therefore many units overpainted the pale blue sides with various patterns of green and grey.

Bf.109E-4
Unit: Stab I/JG 3
Serial: < o

Late August/early September 1940. This plane was among filmed fighters en route near the White cliffs of Dover. It was probably flown by Lt. Detlev Rohwer (38 victories). It is possible that it was this mount in which Lt.Rohwer participated in a dogfight with fighters of No. 303 Squadron on September 2, 1940. After the engagement he had to perform a forced landing in the Channel. On no account Rohwer ranked among rookies at that time. He scored his first victory (a Blenheim) on June 6th, 1940, during the French campaign. The machine wears a rather interesting camouflage. Except for the nose, the entire fuselage was oversprayed with RLM 70 Schwarzgrun, the nose and rudder were Yellow. The Yellow paint also covered the Gruppenemblem of I/JG 3 of 'Talzelwurm', which was usually applied on the engine cowling.
