Airacobra Mk.I (P-400) | Unit: 19th GvIAP Serial: BX228 Pavel S. Kutakhov was one of the outstanding Soviet pilots along the Murmansk front, rising eventually to the command of the 19 GIAP. He flew this Airacobra (thought to be BX228) in several battles before acquiring a new machine in 1943. 'BX228' carries no tactical number, but wears a Guard's Emblem on the starboard door (no view is available to port). The RAF codes and insignia on this grey and green scheme have been partially covered by a lighter grey shade, in this drawing depicted as Medium Grey. The spinner appears to have been Sky-S, as well as the fuselage band, and there is just a hint of Soviet stars on the wing upper surfaces.

Airacobra Mk.I (P-400) | Unit: 6th IAE VMF SF Serial: 77 White coloured P-39s are rare in VVS service, and this ex-RAF P-400 is surely one of the most attractive. '77' was photographed in service with the 6th Independent Fighter Eskadrilya on the Northern Front, winter of 1942-43. The pilot has been identified by two different authors as Yuri Penakov, presumably by appearance (the photo features no caption). 'Red 77' is very smartly finished in white MK-7 distemper, but the underside US applied Medium Grey seems to remain. The rudder seems to show the underlying colour through the white applique, however, giving a worn appearance. The national star marking is trimmed in yellow, giving a very nice appearance on the white background. Alas, just before writing this article it occurred to me that I do not have permission to publish the port side photo of 'Red 77', and so for the time being this anemic view from the nose will have to suffice. It does, though, offer a clue as to the professionally applied white colour, and shows the pilot standing behind.
Penakov Yuriy
