The first production Grumman TBF-1 Avenge was BuNo 00373, which was delivered to the US Navy (USN) in January of 1942. The aircraft was camouflaged with Non-Specular (NS) Blue-Gray (FS35189) uppersurfaces over NS Light Gray (FS36440) undersurfaces. The national insignia was only applied to the fuselage, upper port wing, and lower starboard wing. This insignia was later added to he upper starboard and lower port wings, along with 13 red and white rudder stripes.

TBF-1 26-GS-10 (BuNo 00509) was assigned to Auxiliary Scouting Squadron 26 IVGS-26: aboard the escort carrier CVE-30 USS Charger for carrier qualifications in late 1942. This Squadron later flew from the CVE-26 USS Sangamon in support of the Anglo-American invasion of French North Africa (Operation Torch) that November. The red circle of the national insignia and the rudder stripes were removed by a USN regulation of 6 May 1942. // This plane has midair with TBF-1s 00514 and 00590 (from VT-3) at 3 miles NE of Makapu Pt, HI on 11th October 1942. All 3 pilots bailed out.

This TBF-1 (C-5) was assigned to Composite Squadron 30 (VC-30) aboard the light carrier CVL-26 USS Monterey in the fall of 1943. The aircraft was finished in the Pacific scheme of NS Sea Blue (FS35042), Intermediate Blue (FS35164), and NS White (FS37855). The wing and horizontal stabilizer uppersurfaces were painted Semi-Gloss Sea Blue (FS25042). The red-bordered national insignia was only authorized for use between 28 June 1943 and 31 July 1943; however, the change to the blue-bordered insignia was not complete until late in that year.
