Pfalz D.III
Unit: Jasta 15
Serial: 4184/17

This is Pfalz D.III of Ufz. Hegeler of Jasta 15. It was one the last Pfalz D.III ever build. The plane has a well documented history: Hegeler was shoot down in this plane on February 26, 1918 by Lt. A. Cowper of 24th. Squadron RFC. Hegeler survived the forced landing and was made prisoner. His intact machine became the subject of several British technical reports. Allocated the British capture number G141, Hegeler's Pfalz was subsequently re-marked with RFC-roundels. The rear fuselage and tail unit was doped in PC10 (dark brown olive). The aeroplane was later displayed at London's Agricultural Hall in Islington between November 1918 and January the following year.

Pfalz D.IIIa
Unit: Jasta 18
Serial: unknown

Pilot - Lt.Hans Burkhard von Buttlar. Early 1918.

This machine was flown by several different pilots. Most notably by Lt. Hans Burkhard von Buttlar especially during the time that Jasta 18 and 15 changed identities in early 1918. When Lt. von Buttlar joined Jasta 18 on 15 January 1918, he was given Uffz. Hitschler's Pfalz D.IIIa (other sources say that it was Lt. Walter Kleffel's D.IIIa) that had five white narrow bands around the fuselage just aft of the cockpit. Von Buttlar painted over the white bands with red paint. The red paint did not cover the white band join with equal width blue bands that the aft fuselage was painted. Over the red band he painted large white hunting horns, adapted from his family's coat of arms. The horn was suspended from two white cords joined at the top of the fuselage. The fuselage was red from the rear cabane strut forward. Lt. von Buttlar removed the spinner which had also been red. This special Pfalz is something of a hybrid, as it is a D.IIIa, but has the pointed lower wingtips generally associated with the D.III. It is probable that von Buttlar took this machine with him to Jasta 15 on the conversion of Jasta 18 and Jasta 15 on 18 March 1918.
