Aviatik-Berg D.I/D.II/Dr.I | Austria-Hungary | Flik 74J | Aviatik D.I | 38.63
05/08/2013

Aviatik D.I 38.63, among the first fitted with raised, cowl-mounted guns within reach of the pilot, left the factory for frontline service in June or early July 1918. Korporal Josef Marszalek of Flik 74J was wounded on July 15, 1918, when the fighter crashed due to wing failure. As the war progressed, a variety of camouflage patterns were applied to the Austro-Hungarian aircraft. The hexagon pattern existed in several types. The small pattern, shown on this profile, is not correct for this plane. 38.63 wore a more bold hexagon version, looking like a bee alveoli. The 'T'-marking on this plane is also wrong.
