Having read the comments, written below, especially disputes between the representatives of small nations of Europe, I've got sured one more time that the history and the life and the mindset never change. Look at these [censored] yankees, they speak about some communism. Sir, have you ever seen a communism? I can advise you where to look for. Under your feet. Yes sir. Dig up an ant-hill and there you'll find a communism.
But I don't want to say some abstract things. Every less or more smart person understands that all this is called simply - policy. And the policy, as you know, is a system of men's relationships on the high level, a state, for instance.
The new century had come and the new big war is coming just like it was for the last 400 years (before the 17th century wars were so permanent that can't be counted). Of course people of weak West want to be sure that the situation won't change. That's why they demostrate the problems and solutions of the past. But the new time had come. Dear gentlemen, look attentively at your leaders and ask yourself why they don't say anything to such democratic country as China. The answer is simple, if the pronounce even a word, your weak economies, which produce nowadays only virtual goods, will collapse at once.
And you'll ask, for sure, what is the role of Russia in all this. Well gentlemen, it was in opposition to Britain, to America and soon it will be to China. But Russians want to trick history, maybe for the first time in their history they make something smart (that's because Russians are naturally very honest as nation, comparing with their, as it is popular to say today, anglo-saxon p a r t n e r s .
They want to make a friendship with Chinese. Well, as the Russian saying is, time will show, if they are right. The only thing I certainly know is that people of the East are very wise.

Dear Grzegorz, correct me if I'm wrong, You're from Poland?
Finally someone who's using some legal argument on the issue.
I must admit that I was confused at the beggining. Even now a little.
In most cases and through the centuries, Russia and Serbia were allies. On the other side, Gruzia did not recognized Kosovo and, in cases of South Osetia and Abkhazia, acting from the legally same positions as Serbia in case of Kosovo and Metohia.
However, as I quoted an ancient roman phrase in one of my previous posts at this pages, INTER ARMA SILENT LEGES.
I strongly believe that Russia is DEFENDING her people in Gruzia, as Serbia did, not only in Kosovo, but in Croatia and Bosnia also (the world recognized the rights of former Yugoslav republics to secede from Yugoslavia, not recognizing the same right to Serbs in Croatia and Bosnia; where's the international law in all this?).
And who was defended by NATO? My people was suffering from Hitler's allies Croats, Muslims and Albanians in WWII (from Albanians even earlier) and, once again, since the 1980's (acording to some it never stopped: many Serbs were forced to leave Kosovo after WWII; did You knew that a Croatian terrorist planted an explosive device in a Belgrade cinema sometimes in 1970's?...)! NATO bombed Serbs in Bosnia and provided military and intelligence support to Croatia. Finally, at the end of the 20th century, we came under the NATO bombs and our former allies (Americans, British, French,...) supported Kosovo Albanians proclaiming independence.
After all, how comes that number of Serbs in Croatia decreased from over half a milion (12.2%) in 1991 to barely 200 thousand (4.5%) in 2001 (official data)? In which country lives most refugees after Yugoslav wars (over 200 thousand from Kosovo only)? And who turns out to be guilty? The one who does not stand beside America!
Therefore, even I do understand how hard is the situation of Gruzia, I will support Russia, who is DEFENDING, and I repeat DEFENDING her people.
Please, don't get me wrong, I'm not some kind of warmonger. But I'm angry, tired and dissapointed. Maybe the conflicts in South Osetia and Kosovo are not the same, but I have every reason to believe that we're not equal in the eyes of the law.

[Vuk, 26.08.2008 03:58]
Dear Vuk, Serbian friend!
The situation in Georgia and in Kosovo is different. Kosovo was part of Serbia, while South Ossetia isn't part of Russia, but Georgia. If you accept the Serbian right to defend Serbians in Kosovo, and if you condemn NATO bombings of Serbia, you, logically, must accept Georgian rights for Ossetia and be against Russian intervention in Georgia.

[Grzegorz, 25.08.2008 03:51]
Do You really believe the world is black and white, Uncle Sam?
I am not the defender of communism and I got no reason to do something like that.
My grandfather was a POW, captured by the nazis in 1941. He manage to escape and joined to the communist resistance. However, in early 1950's, he was imprisoned by the communists for critising the authorities in public. In 1987, my uncle, university professor, was imprisoned because of a press article.
Yes, this is not the true taste of freedom!
But no one, especially those who were bombing my country (not only in 1999, but also back in 1944 when we were alies! - US bombing of Belgrade on Easter 1944 was more devastating than nazi bombardment in 1941) would not tell me how to think, or what should I do or not!
So, I will repeat: as most of Serbs does, I do support my russian sisters and brothers! Russia is defending her people in South Osetia and Abkhazia, as Serbia did in Kosovo!

[Vuk, 24.08.2008 14:48]
Anyone who thinks life under a communist dictatorship has never tasted true freedom, and chooses to ignore the fact that thousands of people lost their lives to escape those conditions, and many thousands more came to the US for a better life, not the other way around!

[Uncle Sam, 22.08.2008 03:24]
"... the Russian people were given a wonderful opportunity to become a true democracy, but sadly have chosen to hang on to a has been Stalinista like Putin... Russia needs to be absolutely sanctioned with economic embargoes until she crawls back into her cave and makes full economic restitution to Georgia. Then she can be a part of the modern world..."

True democracy? Modern world? I wonder what the American Natives think about it? Or people of Latin America, Philippines, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, islamic states,... So many of us living in a dark!
When an american tourist gets cold, USA sends troops, while the defending lives of your people becomes a crime?!
This words of yours are offensive, at least. You must realise that you cannot dictate other nations what to do.
One more thing, Mr. Old Hippy: someone noticed that people who decided to bomb my country in 1999 were mainly the students back in late 1960's or 1970's (Clinton, Solana, Blair,...). Warlike hippies?!

[Vuk, 18.08.2008 12:04]
After the collapse of the U.S.S.R. the Russian people were given a wonderful opportunity to become a true democracy, but sadly have chosen to hang on to a has been Stalinista like Putin. Don't give me that crap that he isn't President of Russia; he is a de facto dictator ala Lenin, Stalin, and Kruschev. If Putin says "jump" his updated politburo buddies ask: How high, Leader?" Russia needs to be absolutely sanctioned with economic embargoes until she crawls back into her cave and makes full economic restitution to Georgia. Then she can be a part of the modern world. The world can no longer and will no longer tolerate self-serving dictators of his ilk. I am an American, and fully support any relief for the Georgians and punitive sanctions against Russia.

[Old hippie, 18.08.2008 05:35]
It is very interesting that those who support Gruzia cannot say anything else but "Russians, go home..."?! Is the independence of Gruzia only fact they can use?
When my country, Serbia, intervened on Kosovo i Metohija to protect serbian minority, western states (primarily USA) called this a genocide and ethnic cleansing. Than, can you explain to me and to yourselves, why it is so different than situation in Gruzia? Serbia was also an independent state at the moment when NATO attacked, not just the serbian military at Kosovo, but alco the civilian objects at entire serbian territory. For example, NATO destroyed all the bridges in Novi Sad, the city where I was born and which is 90 km northern of Belgrade and almost 400 km away from Kosovo!
Let me tell you something: when I was a child, I had a classmates in elementary school, which families were forced to leave Kosovo. And I'm 36! My 82-year old grandmother, which is, by the way, from Montenegro, told me the stories about albanian crimes on Kosovo and in Montenegro, which her grandmother was telling her?!
The point is: Kosovo is not yesterday's, but much older problem. South Osetia and Abkhazia also. And now, NATO, USA and EU talk about the international law? This is HIPOCRISY!
Although the possible independence of South Osetia and Abkhazia will be another western argument for independence of Kosovo, I do support my russian brothers and sisters! INTER ARMA SILENT LEGES (In times of war, the law falls silent)!

Ruskkie go home! The Soviet Union doesn't exist anymore. Stay out of Georgia and leave it free!

[Uncle Sam, 13.08.2008 00:08]
Georgia attacked and killed Russian peacekeepers and civilians who wanted to be apart of Russia. While I believe the Russian government overeacted a little, they have every right to defend the remaining Russians there.

[Messerschmitt BF-109G-14, 11.08.2008 22:19]
Every person has the right to live. Thus, Russians living in South Ossetia should be protected and respected by the Georgians, and left in peace, like any other citizen.

On the other hand, no one has the right to break down an independent state like Georgia. Thus, Russian military intervention in the conflict can hardly be justified.
