She was laid down in 1943 in Belfast for Royal Navy as HMS Powerful. However construction was suspended after the end of WW2, until she was bought in 1952 by Royal Canadian Navy. Then she was refitted with an angled flight deck and steam catapult and suitable for F2H-3 Banshee jet fighters. In January 1957 she was commissioned in the RCN as HMCS Bonaventure. She was used almost for anti-submarine patrol. In 1962 Banshees jets were retired. In 1964 she got new Sea King ASW helicopters. In 1966-1967 she has mid-life refit. In 1970 she was decommissioned. In 1971 she was scrapped in Taiwan. Some her steam catapult components were used to rebuild the catapult of Australian HMAS Melbourne aircraft carrier.
