  • In March 1944 she was commissioned, but construction was stopped due to end of WW2. Work was resumed in 1952.
  • In November 1959 she was commissioned.
  • During the 1960's - 1970's she was one of four Royal Navy strikes carrier. She operated mostly in Indian Ocean.
  • In May 1967 she could have attack Egyptians off the Strait of Tiran when they blocked Red Sea entrance, but operation was cancelled.
  • In 1980-1981 she was refitted to be able use Harrier VTOL's.
  • In Spring-Summer 1982 she was the flagship of British forces during the Falklands war.
  • In August-November 1982 she was repaired.
  • In 1984 she was decommissioned into reserve.
  • In 1986 she was sold to Indian Navy (she was originally aimed to Royal Australian Navy, but was cancelled).

  • In 1986-1995 she was extensively refitted at Devonport Dockyard.
  • In 1995 she was commissioned as INS Viraat (means "Giant"). She carries Sea Harrier VTOL's and ASW-helicopters.
  • In 1999-2001 and 2003-2004 she was repaired.
  • It is planning to replaced her in 2011-2012 by new INS Vikramaditya aircraft carrier (ex Russian Admiral Gorshkov).
