  • She was commissioned on July 5th, 1939.
  • On December 7th, 1941 she took part in Pearl Harbour attack.
  • In the end of December 1941 she launched strikes against Wake island.
  • In January 1942 she supported the Battle of Ambon.
  • In February 1942 she launched air strikes against Darwin, Australia.
  • In March 1942 she took part in the Battle of the Java Sea, helping sink the Dutch freighter Poelau Bras.
  • In April 1942 she took part in the Indian Ocean raid, launching air strikes against the Royal Navy base at Ceylon and helping to sink the Royal Navy cruisers Cornwall and Dorsetshire, carrier Hermes and Australian destroyer HMAS Vampire.
  • On April 19th, 1942 she pursued the American carriers Hornet and Enterprise after they launched the Doolittle Raid, but without success.
  • On June 4th, 1942 she took part in the battle of Midway. Her aircraft heavily damaged USN carrier Enterprise (she was sunk later by I-168 submarine). However US Navy SBD Dauntless dive bombers from the damaged her by four 454 kg bombs. She was abandoned by crew, finally torpedoed by Japanese destroyer and sank. 416 crewmen lost.
