  • She was laid down as the fast luxury passenger liner Idzumo Maru, but purchased by the Japanese Navy in 1940 and converted to an aircraft carrier.
  • She was commissioned in July 1942.
  • In November 1942, she was twice damaged by air raids at Truk.
  • In April 1943, she was slight damage by air raid on Truk.
  • On June 10th, 1943 she was hit by several torpedoes from the submarine USS Trigger. Towed to Yokosuka for repairs.
  • In December 1943, she ferried aircraft to Singapore, Saipan, and Truk.
  • In the Battle of the Philippine Sea on 21th June 1944, she was damaged by USN aviation and sank.
