Fate: sank in combat
  • She was laid down as the Amagi class battlecruiser in 1920, but finished as aircraft carrier.
  • She was commissioned in March 1927 with capacity of 61 aircraft.
  • During 1935-1938 she was extremely modified. It extended the hangars forward, removed the flying off decks, and increased aircraft capacity to 91.
  • In 1938-1941 she was the flagship of Carrier Division 1 operated off China and blockade the coast.
  • On December 7th, 1941 she took part in the Pearl Harbour attack.
  • In January, 1942 she supported the invasion of Rabaul in the Bismarck Islands.
  • In February 1942 she launched air strikes against Darwin, Australia, sinking nine ships, including USS Peary.
  • In March, 1942 she covered the invasion of Java.
  • In early April, 1942 she took part in the Indian Ocean raid. She launched air strikes against Colombo, Ceylon, helping sink the cruisers Cornwall, Dorsetshire and sank Hermes and her escorts.
  • On April 19th, 1942 she took part in the unsuccessful pursuit of the American carriers Hornet and Enterprise after they launched the Doolittle Raid.
  • On June 4th, 1942 she took part in Battle of Midway, heavily damaged by USN aviation and abandoned. Next day she was torpedoed by Japanese destroyers and sank.
