  • She was launched in 1985 at Nikolaev, Black Sea and named "Riga".
  • In 1988 she was launched.
  • In June 1990 she was renamed "Varyag" (Viking, Norsemen).
  • In 1992 June construction stopped 67% complete and ship was transferred to Ukraine.
  • In 1998 she was sold to Chinese company in Macau. It was reported that the ship would become a casino.

  • In 2001-2002 she was towed to Dalian Shipyard in northeastern China (around Africa). The plans to convert shit to casino were cancelled.
  • In early 2007 conversion to the Chinese multipurpose aircraft carrier began.
  • In late 2007 she was renamed "Shi Lang" and got "83" code.
  • According some reports she can be commissioned in the end of 2009 or 2010. However the further fate of the ship is unclear because Russian blocked sale of carrier based Sukhoi Su-33 aircraft to China.
