She was originally built as light cruiser Newark CL-100, on 26 October 1942; redesignated CV-30 and renamed Reprisal, then renamed San Jacinto and converted, while building, to a light aircraft carrier and reclassified as CVL-30. In 1944 she providing search patrols to protect other carriers striking at Wake and Marcus Islands. During 1944 it took part in many combat in Pacific Ocean against Marianas, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Formosa, Philippines. In 1945 she took part in attacks against Japan Homeland. In Spring 1945 she support Okinawa invasion entailed heavy air activity with many kamikadze planes. Decommissioned on 1 March 1947 and joined the Pacific Reserve Fleet berthed at San Diego. Reclassified as an auxiliary aircraft transport AVT-5 on 15th May 1959. She was struck from the Navy list on 1st June 1970 and scrapped.
