During 1943-1944 she took part in many combats at Pacific including strikes against Rabaul, operations over Gilbert Islands, Tarawa, Bismarck Archipelago, Marshall Islands, Marianas, Palau, Truk, Battle of the Philippine Sea, Caroline Islands, Okinawa, Luzon, and Formosa. During 1945 she participated in the Battle of Iwo Jima, Battle of Okinawa. On May 11th, 1945 while supporting the Okinawa invasion, Bunker Hill was hit and severely damaged by two kamikazes. This was the single most deadly kamikaze attack on a U.S. ship during World War II. She went for repairing. During end of 1945 beginning of 1946 she took part in massive evacuation of Allies troops (Operation Magic Carpet). She placed out of commission in reserve in January 1947. While laid up, she was reclassified three times, becoming CVA-17 in October 1952, CVS-17 in August 1953 and AVT-9 in May 1959. She was used as a stationary electronics test platform at San Diego during the 1960s and early 1970s. She was sold for scrapping in May 1973.
