In 1938-1941 she was built as civil oiler Markay. In Summer 1941 she was bought by US Navy and completed as oiler AO-33 Suwannee. From the end of 1941 to early 1942 she served with Atlantic fleet. In February-August 1942 she was converted to the auxiliary aircraft carrier AVG-27, then in August 1942 redesignated ACV-27 and recommissioned in September. In November 1942 she took part in the Operation Torch the Allies invasion of North Africa. Her aircraft flew antisubmarine patrol missions. Since early 1943 she operated in Solomons area for the next eight months and provided protection for resupply convoys en route to Guadalcanal. In July 1943 she was reclassified escort aircraft carrier CVE-27. In November 1943 she supported Gilbert Islands operations. In January-February 1944 she supported Marshalls operations. In March-May 1944 she operated against Palau, supported Hollandia, New Guinea landings. In June 1944 she strikes against Tulagi, Saipan, Kwajalein, Guam, supported the invasion of the Marianas. On 19th June 1944 she took part in the Battle of the Philippine Sea. Her aircraft flew antisubmarine patrol missions and sank I-184 Japanese submarine. In September 1944 she supported landings on Morotai in the Netherlands East Indies. In October 1944 she landings at Leyte Gulf, Philippines. On 25/26 October 1944 she was heavily damaged by kamikadze strikes and sailed for repairing. In November 1944 - January 1945 she was repaired in USA. In April-May 1945 she supported Okinawa landings. In June-July 1945 she supported landings at Balikpapan, Borneo. In September 1945 she returned USA and joined Atlantic Fleet. In October 1946 she was placed in a reserve. In June 1955 she was reclassified an escort helicopter aircraft carrier, CVHE-27. In 1959 she was sold for conversion to merchant service, but project was cancelled and in 1962 she was scrapped.
