  • In January 1962 she was commissioned. She became the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.
  • In 1962 during the Cuban missile crisis she took part in naval blockade of Cuba.
  • In 1963-1964 she sailed around the world.
  • In 1965 she was overhauled.
  • From the end of 1965 to early 1973 she made six combat deployments to Southeast Asia and took active part in the war over Vietnam.
  • In January 1968 and April 1969 during the Korean Crisis she was operated off North Korean coast.
  • On January 14th, 1969 one unguided rocket misfired on the board and blew up, creating a massive conflagration. 27 crewmen killed, 314 injured, 15 aircraft destroyed.
  • In December 1971 during the Bangladesh Liberation War, she operated in the Bay of Bengal and tried to block India's fleet.
  • In January-February 1973 after cease-fire in Vietnam her aircraft clew combat sorties against Laos.
  • In 1974 she was overhauled and modernized, she got new F-14 fighters and reclassified multipurpose nuclear-covered aircraft carrier CVN-65.

  • In 2008-2009 she was overhauled.
  • It is planing to decommission ship in late 2012 or early 2013.
