  • In January 1959 she was commissioned.
  • During 1960-1964 she operated in the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Bay of Biscay and Norwegian Sea. She took part in many exercises.
  • In 1962 during the Cuban missile crisis she took part in naval blockade of Cuba.
  • In May-December 1965 she operated off Vietnamese coast and actively took part in strikes against North Vietnam.
  • In the second half of 1960's she operated in Atlantic, Mediterranean, took part in many exercises.
  • In 1970's she operated in Mediterranean and Indian Ocean.
  • In January 1971 during Jordanian crisis she support actions against the Palestinians.
  • In 1971-1973 she was overhauled and modernized. In February 1973 she was reclassified multipurpose aircraft carrier CV-62.

  • In 1973 during the Yom Kippur War she was operated in Eastern Mediterranean ready for possible evacuation contingencies in the Middle East.
  • In the end of 1980 she operated in Indian Ocean in response of US citizen captured by Iranians.
  • In 1982 and 1983 she provided support to the multinational peacekeeping force in Lebanon.
  • In October 1983 she supported US invasion of Grenada.
  • In 1990 she took part in the Operation Desert Shield to prevent Iraqi aggression.
  • In 1992-1993, 1995 and 1998 she operated in Persian Gulf and provided patrol missions in "No Fly" zone in South of Iraq.
  • In 1994 she operated off Korean coast during the Korean Crisis.
  • In 1996 she operated off Chinese coast during the Chinese-Taiwanese Crisis.
  • In 1998 she was decommissioned.
  • Nowadays she located in Puget Sound, Bremerton, Washington and wait for scrapping or she may be sunk as artificial reefs. Her fate is still unclear.
