  • On December 19th, 1960 when she was heavily damaged by fire while under construction. 50 workers killed. The extensive damage cost 75 million dollars to repair.
  • In October 1961 she was commissioned.
  • In 1961-1962 she operated off USA coast, took part in exercises.
  • In February-September 1963 she operated in Western Pacific as part of 7th Fleet.
  • Since May 1964 she operated in Gulf of Tonkin. Her aircraft and flew armed photo reconnaissance missions over Laos until July 1964.
  • In early August 1964 she participated in Gulf of Tonkin Incident and started massive aerial aggression against North Vietnam.
  • In early 1965 she returned to USA.
  • In 1966, 1968-1970 she has several cruises to Vietnam coast and took active part in Vietnam War.
  • In 1970 she was overhauled in USA.
  • From October 1971 to March 1972 she was deployed off Vietnam coast and took part in massive aerial war against Vietnam.
  • After short trip to USA she returned to South East Asia again in January 1973 and her aircraft continued to strike targets in Laos until a cease-fire in that country was called on 21 February.
  • In November 1974 she sailed Persian Gulf.

  • In 1975-1976 she was overhaul and redesigned multipurpose carriers CV-64.
  • In 1977-1979 she operated in Pacific Ocean.
  • In March-May 1979 during the political crisis in Yemen she operated into the Indian Ocean.
  • In 1980 during the unsuccessful attempt to free American hostages from American Embassy in Tehran, Iran she operated in Indian Ocean too.
  • In 1981-1982 she operated in Western Pacific and Indian Ocean.
  • In 1983-1984 she was modernized and allow to operate the new F/A-18A Hornet strike aircraft.
  • In April-October 1987 she supported the Operation Earnest Will, the escorting of re-flagged Kuwaiti tankers in the Persian Gulf during the "Tanker War".
  • In the early 1990 she took part in exercises with the air forces of several South American countries
  • In 1990-1993 she overhauled under $800-million, three-year SLE-Programme.
  • In 1994 she operated near Korean coast.
  • In 1995 and 1997 she was involved in Operations Southern Watch - enforcing the no-fly zone over southern Iraq - and operated in Persian Gulf.
  • In Summer 1999 she operated near the Korean Peninsula during the North and South Korean tensions.
  • In the end of 1999, in 2001 and from December 2002 to early 2003 she operated in Persian Gulf and enforced the no-fly zone over southern Iraq again.
  • In November-December 2002 she supported Operation Enduring Freedom - War in Afghanistan.
  • In March-April 2003 she was involved in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
  • In August 2003 she was decommissioned to reserve.
  • In December 2003 she was formally removed from the Naval Vessel Register but it still in Reserve Category X (it receives no maintenance, and only security).
