  • She was commissioned in August 1943.
  • In January 1943 she sailed to the Pacific and prepared for the invasion of the Marshall Islands.
  • From the end of January 1943 to early February 1944 she took part in combats over Marshalls - Kwajalein Atoll, Roi-Namur, Ennuebing Island.
  • In February 1944 she took part in destroying and damaging of many Japanese merchants in Micronesia and raid for Truk.
  • In March 1844 she sailed to USA for repairing.
  • In June-August 1944 she departed for 2 months of operations out of Pearl Harbor, then to the Marshalls.
  • In September-October 1944 she operated against Palaus, Peleliu, southern Philippines, Formosa and Okinawa.
  • In the end of October 1944 she took part in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. She damaged/sunk several Japanese battleships and aircraft carriers.
  • On October 30th, 1944 she was damaged by kamikadze attack, but still in combat.
  • In November 1944 she strikes against airfields and shipping in the Philippines.
  • On November 25th, 1944 she was damaged by two kamikadze aircraft and headed for San Francisco, USA for repairs.
  • She returned to Pacific in March 1945 and strikes against Japanese Home Islands and ships. She damaged 18 enemy naval vessels including super battleship Yamato and carrier Amagi.
  • In March-April 1945 she strikes against Okinawa.
  • In May 1945 she returned San Francisco for repairs.
  • In August 1945 she strikes Wake Island.
  • In August-December 1945 she supported occupation of Japan, then returned USA.
  • In March 1947 she was decommissioned and joined the Pacific Reserve Fleet.

  • In December 1961 she was reclassified an anti-submarine warfare carrier CVS-11.
  • In March-April 1962 she was overhauled and refitted for her new antisubmarine warfare role.
  • In May 1962 she was used for Mercury 7 space capsule recovering.
  • In Autumn 1962 was has overhaul at Norfolk.
  • In the end of 1963 she took part in sea hunt for the Venezuelan freighter Anzoategui, hijacked by group of pro-Castro terrorists.
  • In 1964-1965 she operated in the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Caribbean.
  • In March 1965 she was recovery ship for Gemini 3 spacecraft.
  • In the second half of 1965 she finally modernized under FRAM programme.
  • In 1966-1969 she has three tour to the Vietnam coast to actively participated in Vietnam War.
  • In March 1974 she was decommissioned for the final time.
  • In August 1982, the ship opened in New York City as the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum.
  • In 1986 she was designated as a National Historic Landmark.
  • The FBI used it as an operations center after the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks.
  • In 2006-2008 she got intensively restoration.
