She was originally built as light cruiser CL-61 Tallahassee, then finished and commissioned in February 1943 as CV-23 and renamed Princeton. In July 1943 she was reclassified as CVL-23. In August-September 1943 she provided air cover during the occupation of the Baker island. In October 1943 she strikes against Tarawa, Makin. In November 1943 she operated against Buka, Bougainville, Nauru. Her her planes raided Rabaul. In January-May 1944 she operated at area of Marshall Islands, Palau, Caroline Islands, Hollandia. In June 1944 she operated against Saipan, Guam, Tinian. She took part in the Battle of the Philippine Sea. In July 1944 she returned to the Marianas. She supported the occupation of Guam and Tinian. In September-October 1944 she operated in the Philippines area. On October 20th, 1944 she took paêt in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. On the October 24th, 1944 she was hit by Japanese dive bombers and sunk. 108 crewmen lost.
