SlovakiaSVZ - Khaki Camouflage Scheme1939 - 1944
The WW2 Slovenske Vzdusne Zbrane [Slovakian Air Arm] used the same standard colour
schemes as its predecessor, the pre-war Czechoslovakian Air Force, throughout its entire
involvement in the war. The basic colour scheme was set out in the camouflage regulations of
the Ceskoslovenske Vojenske Letectvo first introduced in the mid-thirties. The upper
and side surfaces of operational aircraft were painted Khaki, while the undersides
were Hlinikove Bronz (matt aluminium dope). From August-September 1938, however, the
lower surfaces of newly-built aircraft began to be painted Svetlesede, a light
blue-grey colour also applied during repairs and overhauls of SVZ machines during the war.
The only exception to the rule was a Bloch (Aero) MB.200 night bomber operated by the
SVZ, which had an overall Khaki colour scheme devised for a better concealment during night
operations. Some biplane fighter types (B-534s and especially Bk-534s), also
got their upper wing undersides totally painted in Khaki.
The Czechoslovak Khaki paint was a shade closer to green than to brown, but with the passing
of time it faded to paler shades. Its final hue was also influenced by the quality and
number of Cellon lacquer layers covering the camouflage colour. In some parts of the
aircraft the number of layers was higher, resulting in different shades of the Khaki paint.
These differences in colour were specially marked in freshly painted aircraft between the
metal and fabric covered areas.
